Broaching Machines Provide The Perfect Finish to Many Projects

In the simplest of terms, a broaching machine is a piece of equipment or tool that is utilized for finishing different types of surfaces. Broaching machines vary but the most common types and sizes are listed below:

  • The sizes are typically between 24" and 48" in increments of 12"
  • Machines typically weigh between 2 and 4 tons
  • The feet per minute (fpm) rate is typically 60-120fpm often with these two speeds with a maximum of 160fpm
  • Most machines come with the option of 15-16 unused inputs allowing for customization
  • Gibs are a piece in the equipment that fits between the machines edge path and the contributing component. These are made of different materials such as bronze and iron.
The broaching machine actually does have an interesting and unique functionality, particularly when contrasted with some other types of machines that are utilized for similar purposes in regard to the finishing of surfaces. These machines are used in a variety of industries including:
  • Aerospace Industry
  • Transportation Industries
  • Textiles
  • Machinery
  • Specialized Parts for Industries
The machine utilizes what is aptly known as a broach. The broach itself is formed with a series of cutting teeth that are arranged in a row or in a series of rows. The unique functionality of these types of machines is found in the fact that these teeth aligned in a row are graduated in their height. The teeth on the so-called broach that actually cut initially are the shortest in length. The length of the individual teeth increases minutely as you move across to the rear of the broach Because of the manner in which the machines are designed, each tooth removes only a minimal amount of the surface material at one time. The typical machine will have teeth that each removes only a few thousandths of an inch each. For example, in textiles broaching machines are most commonly used for:
  • Cutting multiple fabric edges
  • Specialized cuts or finishes
  • Rotary Broach Functions
Broaching machines are an example of a uniquely valuable tool in many machine shops around the U.S. and indeed the world.
