CNC Milling Machines: Streamlining Manufacturing
CNC milling machines are relatively new creations that have revolutionized the way metal, wood and other solid materials are milled into specific shapes and designs. Harnessing the power and precision that computers can provide, CNC milling machines go a step beyond earlier model numerically controlled machines to provide a single device that can mill and engrave at a number of different angles. CNC, which stands for computer numerical control, was developed in recent years to enable a more precise and cost-effective way to mill objects in large quantities. Unlike older form milling devices, CNC does not always call for the transferring of an object to multiple, preset machines to create the end design.
A single CNC milling machine, which has been programmed to meet certain specifications, can create curves, straight lines, diagonals and even rather complex multi-dimensional cuts, as well. Since one machine can now do it all, the manufacturing industry as a whole has become more streamlined and efficient.
CNC milling machines have also increased the precision involved in creating milled products. CNC milling machines work through special programming packages, called Computer-Aided Manufacturing, or CAM. This software controls the machines and specifies the exact actions that must be taken to mill a part properly. A computer is involved to accept the programming information and it feeds the instructions to the machine.
In most cases, CNC machines are vertical by design, having the ability to move a spindle vertically along the typical Z-axis. This increases the ability for using CNC machines in such applications as engraving, creating multi-dimensional surfaces and more. Special attachments can enable milling machines to produce rather different results.
CNC milling machines were once the domain of large-scale manufacturers for a variety of uses, including:

- For the creation of prototype parts.
Making identical precision parts by hand is virtually impossible. While the invention of NC milling machines helped a great deal, the CNC milling machines of today take it many steps further. These versatile machines take the guesswork out of milling.
